Entire Home Remodel | the Deck House

Post and Beam with Extra Spice” a feature | Carolina Home and Garden Magazine

Homeowners found their ideal Deck House, a 1994-built residence in Hendersonville. This unique architectural style, founded by William Berkes and Robert Brownell in the late 1950s, is noted for its post-and-beam construction, tongue-and-groove wood ceilings, and thick insulation. To modernize the house while preserving its original charm, they hired Paramount Building NC and designers from The Design Gallery in Flat Rock.

The designers maintained the home's structural integrity, updating interior finishes with a focus on Mid Century aesthetics. They incorporated white-painted tongue-and-groove ceilings with dark-stained beams and modernized the extensive glazing with glass doors. The kitchen underwent the most significant transformation, with a new bar area, sleek cabinetry, and improved lighting. A standout feature was the installation of a sculptural range hood to accommodate the homeowners' culinary needs.

The renovation preserved and enhanced the Deck House's characteristic elements, like the fieldstone fireplace and red-oak floors, while adding contemporary touches such as a soaking tub and artistic tile work in the master bath. The project won multiple awards from the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), highlighting the successful blend of historical preservation and modern design.
